VELVET SKIN THO | MAKEUP FOREVER

Makeup forever sent me a sample of the matte velvet foundation and I am mostly a fan. Since I didn't pick my color in store I had to get as close as possible online and I am pretty close but the undertone is more red than the yellow I am.  I still want to assess the shade range in person, they are boasting 40 shades which is the norm now it seems. The problem is sometimes I find dark shades aren't even a skin tone. I hate nothing more than just finding a dark shade of brown and I have no friends that color. Since I can't speak to what the shades are but I can talk about the wearability!
I put this on for a week daily and I was a fan! It is lightweight and blends really well with my contour and blush routine. It stayed all day and I felt like it had a good amount of coverage for my everyday face. Ya girl is tired like all the time and I think it made me look non-zombie. If you find yourself at Sephora swatch it and let me know what you think! I am thinking of making a trip out to just see if the shade range is authentic to darker skintones.
I still standby only loving CoverFX and Fenty beauty. PHEW.

HAVE YOU TRIED THIS YET?

DEVA CURL | MY NATURAL HAIR ROUTINE

As someone who washes their hair about once a week, I don't have too much of a fun story to tell when it comes to my curly natural hair. It does take me a while to get through a bottle of conditioner, and twice as long to get through a bottle of shampoo. My rule for the past 6 years has been to make sure my products are sulfate free. Sulfates make curly hair frizzy, curls need all the moisture they can get! I have pretty good results with Marc Anthony products, but Not Your Mothers also has my heart just based on the scents of everything!
Deva curl sent me their new Decadence leave-in and it gave my curls so much moisture! It contains Quinoa Proteins, yes that quinoa-- it helps add shine. Pequi Oil which has a high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids for curl retention and frizz control. Have you heard of Chufa? Chufa helps provide intense moisture. After using shampoo and conditioner you use the Deva Curl decadence leave-in on wet hair. I have always had the habit of using a product on wet hair first. This one is not oily or off putting. I really like it and you don't need that much product for it to work. Where has this been all my life? I have been missing it.

It even lasts though my second emo rock phase I am going through. If you have curls, I definitely recommend buying this!

ARIZONA

Did you know that Antelope Canyons have been on my bucket list for almost 2 years now? I was flipping through a magazine and the perfume ad for this scent caught my eye. When was the last time that ever happened to anyone? I was kind of drawn to how sweet it was, and I am somehow almost out of my Kim Kardashian Crystal gardenia scent. I wanted something with a little more staying power and I couldn't get this scent out of my head. Its perfect.
The story behind it is great too, Proenza Schouler released a little webseries around it. It is Proenza's first perfume ever.

CURRENT CRUSHES | BEAUTY ROUTINE

I feel like my beauty faves haven't budged much until the past 6 months. I have been trying new things and I am EXCITED to share my current crushes. Below I linked some current crushes, things I use, and things I think are close to what I am suggesting. I have everything from witch hazel to deodorant serum... It's ok. Let's get into it:

I think witch hazel is on top of everyone's list. Its relatively inexpensive and has worked wonders for my skin. I get mini breakouts but this stuff really has helped tame that. I used to have really big pores and I feel like my skin is looking great. I never had any form of astringent in my routine before and this has changed the game.
There are a few ways to buy/use witch hazel. I recently bought this bottle that is just the liquid. I have cotton pads that I use to tone my face at night after I shower. I am always kind of shocked with how much is still on my face even after washing it multiple times before this step. Outside of this liquid they make sheets and presoaked pads for convenience. I personally prefer presoaked pads but I couldn't find them the last time I went to the store. Dickinson's makes a towelette that I swore by when I was on vacation. I have used both Dickenson's and Humphrey's and like them both. Thayers is also a pretty popular brand that you can find at target.
This natural astringent helps reduce inflammation, decreases oil and redness, and speeds the healing of scars. This product is drying when left alone, so I follow up with a cocktail of serums.
I still use Clarins double serum. At $120 a bottle I wanted to find a few serums that I can supplement in between Clarins. I wanted a ways to kind of stretch it out. I heard about the ordinary, which is linked in my shop list, but it's always sold out. While roaming TJmaxx I came across these bottles from Valjean labs in their beauty section (WHICH IS ONE OF MY FAVE LIFE HACKS) and immediately scooped them up at $6.99 each for 1.8 oz. After about a month of use I am impressed. Valjean labs is at Urban Outfitters for $15. I already knew this was a steal but OMG this product is everything. OK. SO what do the colors mean? Why did I pick these? I wanted to target some of my major issues.

HYDRATE (Green): Hydrate boasts a mix of Hyaluronic acid and B5. I love my Hyaluronic acid. It helps plump the skin. Don't let the word acid fool you. I could write a giant post on chemistry and the wonderful world of chemical naming convention but that is for another day. Hyaluronic acid applied topically helps improve elasticity and reverses free radical damage! I love it. B5 is also very moisturizing. It is sometimes called the "anti stress vitamin", it helps relieve fatigue and dullness. My secret pet peeve is dull skin. I get really distracted if I am speaking to someone with a dull complexion. IDK why.

GLOW(Blueish): Glow is made of Vitamin C and Magnesium. These two potent ingredients help balance tone and fade acne scars. Vitamin C can also stimulate collagen production and treat UV photo-damage. Obvious why I bought this one. I put it on in the morning.

RESTORE (pinkish): Niacinamide and Zinc are the main ingredients in this one to help blemish prone skin to restore and rejuvenate. I typically put this one on at night. Niacinamide helps diminish large pores, evens skin tone and counters dullness.

My face responds best to serums. It always has, thats why I love my clarins double serum so much. What I typically do is apply one of the valjean labs serums after cleansing my skin/ toning with witch hazel. After I let Valjean sit for about 2 minutes I rub a small pump of Clarins into my palms and pat onto my forehead, around my eyes, and smile lines. Its a definitely decrease in the amount of clarins I used to pump on my face but this cocktail has really worked wonders in the past month. My wallet is also pretty happy. IDK how long valjeans will be at Tjmaxx but the ordinary makes serums with the same active ingredients, as well as many other brands.
Valjeans has a couple other serums but this is really all that is needed to treat my skin conditions.
Alright, time to puff pass to my next obsession:
KUSH MASCARA. It is formulated with cannabis oil. I have been in the market for a new mascara. My whole life I have never had a good drugstore brand mascara. Only high end brands work well for me. I definitely bought it for the gimmick, it retails $24,  but on their website I got 15% off and free shipping. This could have easily retailed for $35. The tube is solid metal! It came with really cute stickers and a cute pouch. I really like this formula, it makes my lashes very voluminous and longer. My lashes have been hydrated because of the CBD oil that is mixed in. My only complaint is the brush is really extra. It can get messy if I'm not careful with my bottom lashes or inner corners. I will go more in depth with this product next week! It deserves its own post, and an explanation of CBD/ cannabis.
OKURRRR, remember when I mentioned colorism in the Philippines? This Nivea Q10 deodorant serum boasts "White and Firm" on the packaging. I have a bit of hyper-pigmentation on my underarms, so... here I am. Not only does this actually keep me smelling fresh, I have noticed a lighter/ more even coloration with my arm pits. This product is only available overseas and is manufactured in Malay. Yes it contains an alu-salt and that is ok. Again, this is advanced chemistry, but its OK. Do not leave me baseless comments or emails about cancer from alusalts and deodorant. Many researchers have debunked those claims. Regardless, I will be a bit sad when I am out. I have never seen a serum deodorant in the market in the US, its really similar to liquid roll-on. Its probably a gimmick... but I am here for it.

I hope you guys learned a bit about my current beauty crushes. I definitely love how affordable this whole list is! You know I stay ballin on a budget and I want to share more broke bitch hacks.

FLU SZN 2

Y'all. I have been sick for like all of 2018. I NEVER get sick. I should see a DR. but I am very stubborn. I felt better Friday but it all creeped back up on me today. I've been laying pretty low by design. I got sick when I went back to Houston and stopped taking all my vitamins! I spent a little bit of time cleaning out my stuff in storage and I'm pretty sure I have some sort of respiratory infection. With that being said, I missed all my vitamins and wanted to share what kept we well all 2017! I don't think I wouldn't have found more homeopathic forms of wellness without moving here, so I wanted to share!

Clarins Christmas | Advent Calendar

We are winding down 2017 and December always seems so stressful. Even though its my birthday people are consumed with end of year wrap ups and Christmas/ other holidays. Have you heard of an advent calendar? They are a fun way to count down to the new year, typically done with chocolates... BUT CLARINS DID A VERSION WITH BEAUTY.
Advent calendars are traditional, but I grew up with advent candles. I like the aspect of remembering now only how close we are to Christmas (whatever Christmas means to you) and reflecting on each day. The Clarins advent calendar is valued at $218 but you can purchase it for $124. If you shopped during black Friday it was 20% off!
On black Friday I purchased a new bottle of double serum. I ran out but wanted to wait for black Friday to buy a new one. The 1.6 oz bottle retails for $122, so I really wanted to take advantage of the sale. The serum has since changed since I started using it!

I swear by this stuff and without it for about 1.5 weeks my face has broken out and gone insane. Its also very cold now and Double Serum saved me from looking dull. Moisturizer alone is just not enough for me. This is really funny because when I first started wearing serum I was concerned because my face was traditionally oily however my face has evened out a bit since then.
Pictured above is the new Serum (on the left) next to the old one (on the right). Both are 1.6 oz, but the pumping mechanism is so new! The top lets you decide if you need a big pump or a little pump of the serum and its a little easier to push down. It contains 21 plant extracts that target signs of aging within 7 days of use. It smooths, makes your skin radiant, firms, and evens skin tone. I have gone through my skincare routine before here. I might do an updated one next year.
There are so many new advent calendars out there I think its so cute Clarins puts one together every year.

HEY OCTOBER | LETS START NEW AND STUFF

Its October! Its fall, time to get spooky. You know what's spooky? Adulting.
Y'all, this marks 12 months of living in Portland. Well, almost. The end of this month marks 12 months of living in Portland. If you've followed my blog these last 12 months, its actually been really hard. It's great in the sense I am learning alot, I've already gotten a promotion, I enjoy working with my originals team... But it's been hard in the sense of being here alone, trying to work with a new team that I don't blend with, being black in Portland, and dealing with no HEB or Canes.
Anyway, it's not anything that can kill me. My only challenge is losing weight the rest of the year!

In other news, after years of using most of the same items, I finally ventured out and tried a few new beauty products. I LOVE them and have used them all September and wanted to share them:

1) Mario Badescu Facial Spray: I admit I only tried this because it was really hyped but I am not regretting it. You can use it to set makeup which is what I use it for. It makes me look really dewy which is my vibe right now. It smells like roses, but there is a green version that is aloe. Mario makes a moisturizer with SPF that is in my cart next. This product is also only $7 so it's pretty affordable compared to most products like this.

LOVE BUG: Probiotics for 30 days

If you follow me on INSTAGRAM I mentioned early last month that I would be trying out Lovebug probiotics. This is not sponsored but they did send me these for free. You can buy individual bottles at Target or other retailers or have a box like the one pictured above be delivered to you monthly. My box featured 3 different specific probiotics but in one month I only made my way though the "Here's the skinny" bottle. I will take on the vitamin C bottle next because FLU SZN is coming.
So lets just get this out of the way: NO, PROBIOTICS DO NOT GIVE YOU THE SHITS. I think a lot of people were worried about me at first but if anything it makes you regular. I have been taking probiotics since I was younger in the form of yakult ( a yogurt that was originally an asian thing but slowly became American as I got older).
What are probiotics for? In short, they are a good bacteria for your gut. When you think about it, most of your body is determined by what does on in your gut. Eating something bad can make you feel sick, actually get sick, effect your skin, and other health issues. Probiotics help keep your gut healthy. There are many foods that are loaded in probiotics but this pill is fail proof and is an easy way to get them all at once.
I feel a lot better taking them. I am less bloated and feel less sick throughout the day. A fun annoying fact about me is that typically around 3 I start to feel sick. My doctor told me its just heartburn. Its much better now that I don't live in Houston, but every now and then I get this feeling. If I am consistent with my probiotic I don't have it. I heard there are some strains that help while traveling so my probiotics will come with me wherever I go now.

For maximum potency keep your probiotics in the refrigerator and take them before eating. Its easiest to just start the morning with it. They stay in your system for about 10 hours, you could take one at night too if you felt inclined, but I stick to just mornings.
Would you try probiotics? I will be filming a Youtube video on these as well pretty soon!

Fenty Beauty | YASSSSS

WHEN. WILL. YOUR. FAVE?
We all acknowledge Rihanna is beautiful and a style icon, so I am really excited that she is launching a makeup line. I''ll just cut to the chase, Rih has said that her line includes 40 shades of foundation! I swear by CoverFX but I am really excited to come across another brand that has many skintones in the range. Now that I am living somewhere with no diversity, I am really hypersensitive to pointing it out when I see it. I applaud Rihanna for putting more than "Light , Medium, and Dark" tones in her collection.

GLAM TAG COSMETICS | SEND NUDES

If you have seen my lipstick collection I have 2 classic reds, 2 deep wines, and 9823473285762 shades of nude. I don't care if it is one gradient of a difference, I am just obsessed with them. I am getting better at not getting everything that looks pretty... but my friends at Glamtag just enabled me.
My good friend that I used to work with in Houston started her own makeup line! I was so excited to support her business. Not only is she a Girl Boss, Glam tag is also black owned.
My favorites are unclad and birthday suit! Buff is so similar to my Mac shade FAUX.  These are all easy everyday colors and the formula is smooth. They will be on rotation all summer!

ORIGINS #MYPERFECTWORLD

Influenster hosted their first in person event and it was with Origins, the skincare company. I have heard of them in the past  but since I already have some staples in this category I haven't ventured anywhere else. Lucky for me Origins sent me 5 mini samples ahead of the party. My favorite trick for trying new skincare is requesting a small sample from the beauty counter or just buying a small travel size. If the place you are buying from has a great return policy then it shouldn't be a problem to just return something that doesn't work for you. Otherwise, these little samples always help convince me if I want to buy a large version or not. They also make the perfect travel companions.

GLOSSIER in PORTLAND

After work today I headed to a cute meetup with Glossier and AirBnB. I have always seen people talk about glossier but they are online only and I was cautious of just ordering things from them. I was able to try a few items and they even gave everyone boy brow and balm dot com. YOU GUYS, BOTH OF THESE ARE INSTANT FAVES.

DANI AND BELLA THORNE HAIR GOALS.

I personally could never pull this off but I love Dani and Bella Thorne's hair colors right now. I think Bella is naturally a red head and she went for REDDD and NEON tips. This pink bomber jacket is giving me the same vibes as this satin pink track jacket from adidas I have had my eye on.
The Thorne sisters have such an edgy style, I'm not a fan of the septum piercings but how free spirited they are has been really fun to follow. I want to say Dani is older but they look like twinssss.

HAIR GOALS.

FLAWLESS: LUMINESS AIRBRUSH SYSTEM REVIEW

Right before I moved one of the last packages I got was this amazing air brush systems from Luminess. I have reviewed the Air Supremacy products from them before that are great for travel and on the go touch ups. I just published this great levitation post, but this Luminess Kit is how I created my makeup look. It was super hot outside in true Texas fashion and it stayed and didn't budge.
Luminess carries a large array of items outside of the kits, they have great pigmented shadows as well as makeup tools. The pink blender was used a ton!
This kit retails for $249.99. It is the perfect compact system for airbrush makeup. It is very user friendly and easy to match to your skin to create the perfect flawless kit. This kit is very light and you can definitely travel with it. If you attend events where you want a quick easy professional looking makeup application this is a great invention. I think it is very quick and easy to use, you just hold the stylus like you would hold a pen.

1) Prime your face, Luminess makes a great one but you can use your favorite if you want.
2) Really shake the formula you want to apply. Place about 3 drops into the well of the stylus.
3) I hold the stylus about 3 inches from my face and start to airbrush in a circular motion. This product is build-able and you can go from light coverage to full coverage very easily. Keep your wrist moving to avoid the product from looking patchy!
4) Don't forget to clean the system when you are done!

My absolute favorite thing to airbrush is actually highlighter! I went along my cheek bones, brow bone, and cupids bow. It really gives that dewey look in a way that I can't create with my normal highlighter. Hands down my favorite thing about my new airbrush system

Flawless. I will use this for any event look since the coverage is great for photos! Its super light and pretty small I would not mind packing it or traveling with the kit.

Thanks for hanging in there while I move my life from HTX to PDX! It hasn't been as easy as I imagined in my mind. Its only been a week but I swear its been a month.

MY SKINCARE ROUTINE: NEW CLARINS BOOSTER REVIEW

My favorite skincare line hands down is Clarins. I am impressed with their science and purpose when it comes to products and have blogged about them many times. My skincare routine has been pretty simple:

1) Wash my face with L'Oreal GO 360 scrub. I love how it comes with a little scrublet! I really only break out if I am super stressed or eat really badly.
2) After washing my face I apply Clarins Double Serum. I apply this by patting the product onto my face with the palms of my hands. I generally don't apply this to my tzone unless I am going to sleep. I concentrate on the rest of my face and my chin and mouth, I get pretty dry there and I'm not sure why. Serum is the strongest product you apply to your face so I apply it first.
3) I apply my favorite Clarins Eye Cream with my middle finger concentrating on the bags under my eyes and my upper lid on the brow bone. I don't have crows feet or anything but I apply it to prevent any.

4) I finish with Day or Night cream depending on if it is day or night. I have talked about both creams in this blog post. These particularly have great features like SPF, anti pollutant, stress flighting, anti aging, etc.

SO WHAT IS MY NEW STEP? YOU GUYS, CLARINS HAS BOOSTERS THAT YOU CAN ADD TO ANYTHING! They suggest, serum, day cream, foundation and mask. I personally either mix with serum or my cream. You just add 2-5 drops into whatever you are mixing and you are good to go.
Repair is great if you have sunburn. I will keep this in the arsenal for future reference. It also helps in extreme climates so intense cold might work well too. Only time will tell.
Detox is great if you have over indulged in anything bad, if you have been around pollutants or have just eaten bad this is a great way to detox your skin.

This is the one I use often, Energy boost is great for me. This helps combat late nights, hectic lifestyles, jet lag, and exhaustion. I see this being used a ton my first week in PDX.

So many steps. But so worth it in the end.  I started moisturizing when I turned 21, when I turned about 24 or 25 I started doing this Clarins routine. I have great genes but stress can really age you fast, it doesn't matter what your genes are.

How do you take care of your skin?

LOVE, MARA
